Colorado classifies these offenses under the categories of Class 1 and Class 2 misdemeanor theft and Class 3, Class 4, and Class 5 felony theft. The laws in this state are tough when it comes to theft crimes. Penalties range from 3 and 12 months in jail with a $250 to $1,000 fine for Class 2 misdemeanor theft - the lowest category of theft crimes for small thefts valued at less than $500 - to between 4 years and 12 years in state prison, 5 years of parole at minimum, and $3,000 to $750,000 in fines. These harsher penalties are for the most severe level of theft crime: Class 3 felony theft, in which the property stolen is valued at $20,000 or more.
