What is a Licensed Legal Paraprofessional?

Licensed Legal Paraprofessionals (LLPs) are a new category of legal service providers in Colorado, authorized by the Colorado Supreme Court to offer limited legal representation in specific family law matters. LLPs like Megan Urioste bridge the gap for individuals seeking quality legal assistance at a more affordable rate than traditional attorney services. Operating under strict ethical guidelines, Megan specializes in cases where her expertise can deliver efficient, cost-conscious solutions

How Megan Urioste Can Assist You

Megan is qualified to handle a range of family law matters under Colorado Rule of Civil Procedure 207.1, including:

  • Divorce and legal separation
  • Child custody, parental responsibility, and support modifications
  • Protection orders and paternity determinations
  • Name changes and gender designation updates
  • Enforcement or modification of existing court orders

For more complex cases—such as those requiring expert testimony, contested trust assets, or interstate jurisdictional disputes—clients may benefit from consulting a licensed attorney.

Services Offered

Megan provides comprehensive support tailored to your needs:

Legal Strategy: Advising on rights, defenses, and case strategies specific to family law.

Document Preparation: Drafting and filing legal documents such as petitions, answers, motions, modifications, disclosures, discovery, and certain orders. This includes drafting settlement agreements, parenting plans, and Joint Trial Management Certificates.

Court Representation: Accompanying clients to hearings, addressing the court when authorized, and assisting with evidence presentation. Megan can also prepare exhibits for court proceedings.

Mediation & Negotiation: Assisting clients at mediation and negotiating settlements on a client’s behalf.

Financial Analysis: Preparing marital spreadsheets and calculating child support and maintenance.

Unbundled Services: Offering assistance with specific legal tasks for clients who may not require full case management.

While LLPs cannot examine witnesses or manage cases involving complex asset valuations, Megan’s focused training ensures thorough guidance within her authorized scope.

Why Choose an LLP?

Affordability

At $225/hour, Megan’s services provide a budget-friendly alternative for straightforward cases.

Specialized Expertise

With 1,500 hours of family law experience—including 500 hours in Colorado-specific cases—and rigorous licensing exams, Megan combines practical knowledge with ethical rigor.

Ethical Assurance

LLPs adhere to the same professional conduct rules as attorneys, including confidentiality and conflict-of-interest standards, overseen by the Colorado Supreme Court.

Personalized Evaluation

During consultations, Megan assesses whether your case’s complexity and goals align with LLP capabilities. If not, she will recommend attorney involvement.

Key Differences from Attorneys

While LLPs like Megan share many responsibilities with attorneys, their practice is narrowly focused:

  • Scope: Limited to family law matters outlined in CRCP 207.1. They cannot handle criminal cases, multi-party parentage disputes, or matters requiring expert testimony.
  • Courtroom Role: LLPs advise clients on evidence and address the court when invited but cannot cross-examine witnesses.
  • Training: LLPs complete specialized family law education and practical training instead of broad legal curricula.

Qualifications & Oversight

Megan meets stringent state requirements:

  1. Education: A recognized paralegal program or equivalent legal education.
  2. Experience: 1,500 hours of law-related work, including 500 hours in Colorado family law.
  3. Exams: Passed family law, ethics, and professionalism exams administered by the Colorado Supreme Court.
  4. Continuing Education: Annual training to stay current on legal updates.

Licensed LLPs undergo character reviews and disciplinary oversight identical to attorneys, ensuring accountability.

Frequently Asked Questions

We provide free 30-minute consultations. To schedule your consultation, simply reach one of our team members at 303-847-0120 or submit your information below.

  •  After the free consultation, if we determine that we can assist with your case, we will schedule a more in-depth initial meeting. This meeting can take place in person at our office, over Zoom, or by phone, depending on what is most convenient for you.

Prior to this initial meeting, we will provide you with fee agreements that outline our services and billing structure. Please note that these agreements must be signed, and the required retainer fee submitted, before we can officially begin work on your case.

During the initial meeting, we will have an open discussion to better understand the details of your case. This will allow us to create a comprehensive strategy and plan to best represent your interests.

Yes, you will have a designated primary attorney who will handle your case from start to finish. This ensures that you have a consistent point of contact and a trusted advocate dedicated to your needs.

However, our firm believes in a collaborative approach. While your primary attorney represents you, they work closely with our team of experienced attorneys who contribute their diverse expertise and insights behind the scenes. This means that you not only benefit from the focused attention of your primary attorney but also gain the advantage of a collective wealth of knowledge and perspectives. Ultimately, this collaboration enhances your case and ensures that you receive the highest level of service and advocacy.

To begin our attorney-client relationship, a $2,500 retainer fee is required. This retainer fee serves as a security deposit to cover our services.

In addition to the retainer, you will be billed weekly for the actual hourly rates of the specific 4th Street Law team members working on your case. For example, if one of our attorneys billed 8 hours at a rate of $325 per hour, you would be invoiced $2,600 for that week, on top of the $2,500 retainer. However, please note that the weekly billing amount can vary depending on the complexity of your case and the work required – this $2,600 example is for illustrative purposes only.

The same card used to pay the initial $2,500 retainer will be charged weekly for the hourly billing. If a weekly payment is not successfully processed, we will utilize the $2,500 retainer to ensure your representation continues uninterrupted.

At the end of your case, any unused portion of the $2,500 retainer will be refunded to you. This retainer system provides a financial safeguard while allowing us to bill you transparently for the legal services rendered.

We respect client privacy, and every interaction you have with our firm is confidential. Your trust is of extremely importance to us, and we are committed to protecting your personal information throughout the legal process.

To make the most of your initial consultation, it’s helpful to bring any relevant documents related to your case, such as court papers, legal notices, or any correspondence from opposing parties. Additionally, having a list of questions or concerns you’d like to address can ensure we cover everything important during our time together.

The duration of the legal process can vary significantly depending on the specifics of your case. Factors such as court schedules, the complexity of the issues involved, and the cooperation of other parties can all impact timelines. During your initial consultation, we will provide a more tailored estimate based on your unique situation and discuss what you can expect moving forward.

Client Reviews

"I sincerely thank Caroline, Chris and Megan for everything they have done for me. I had a consultation with another large firm before I retained them. I do not think any other firm could have a better understanding about domestic violence, the abuse of the child experiencing during this traumatic process. Our journey was very rocky and full of sorrow. They never gave up on me and supported me like their family. I am forever thankful for everyone in this firm!"
